First decide which side of the glass is dirty

Close the cool door and view the mark from several angles. Wipe a small outside area with a dry microfiber cloth. Then open the door and inspect the cooking-side surface. If the mark does not change from either side and seems to float within the door, it may be between panes.

This matters because an oven door is a layered heat-management assembly. Slots along the top or bottom may be ventilation paths, not cleaning access designed for any tool. The gasket provides a seal and may be damaged by water, cleaner, rubbing, or pulling.

Clean the exterior without feeding liquid into the door

With the oven off and cool, use soap and water on a soft cloth for the door front, top, and sides as allowed by the manual. The cloth should be damp, not dripping. GE warns against letting water or soap enter the vent at the top of the door.

Dry the glass and trim promptly. Avoid oven cleaner, abrasive powder, steel wool, rough pads, and strong solvents on exterior finishes. If the manual permits a glass cleaner, apply it to the cloth instead of spraying the door so mist cannot enter vents or controls.

Treat the cooking-side glass as an oven surface

  1. Wait for a full cool-down. Glass and metal can remain hot after the display appears idle.
  2. Remove loose crumbs. Use a dry cloth while keeping debris out of the hinge slots.
  3. Protect the gasket. Do not wet, rub, or pull a woven fiberglass gasket unless the manual expressly gives a cleaning method.
  4. Use a soapy damp cloth. Work on the accessible glass, not the seams or vents.
  5. Lift heavy soil gradually. Use only the nonabrasive cleaner and pad type approved for the model.
  6. Rinse with a clean damp cloth. Remove cleaner so it is not baked onto the window during the next use.
  7. Dry before closing. Check that no towel or tool remains near the hinges.

Do not scrape with a razor unless the manufacturer specifically approves that tool, angle, and glass type. Coated or treated surfaces can scratch even when ordinary glass would tolerate a blade.

Why streaks appear between panes

During baking, broiling, or self-cleaning, warm vapor can move through the door’s designed airflow path. Grease carried by that vapor may cool and leave a streak inside. GE describes this as a normal occurrence that may appear more often on convection models.

Preventive care is simpler than internal cleaning: wipe excess grease from the cool oven before long cooking or a self-clean cycle, use covered cookware when appropriate, and clean spills after the oven cools. Never block door slots in an attempt to stop vapor.

Between-pane access is model-specific

Some GE models have a published owner procedure that involves removing the entire door and reaching through a bottom opening with a cloth-covered stick. The same page says not to use that method on camera-equipped or side-swing doors and to request service when the instructions do not apply.

That procedure is not a universal home hack. Oven doors can be heavy, hinge springs store force, glass edges are vulnerable, and an incorrectly seated door may not close or heat safely. Do not remove the door based on a video for another brand or model. Never unscrew trim, split the panes, loosen hinges, or lift by the handle.

Know when a cosmetic streak should stay put

If the oven operates normally and the only issue is a faint trapped mark, service may be more risk and expense than the cosmetic result warrants. Monitor it and clean accessible surfaces. A streak is not evidence that food-contact residue is entering the oven cavity.

Service becomes important for cracked or loose glass, a door that will not close, a hinge that snaps or binds, heat escaping unusually, a damaged gasket, camera problems, or liquid trapped after an attempted cleaning.

Photograph a trapped streak after the glass is dry and compare it over time. A stable cosmetic mark is different from spreading moisture, a growing crack, or residue that appears after every use.
