Identify the blind, not just its color

White blinds may be painted real wood, a composite, vinyl, or another material. Wood-grain texture can also be manufactured. Look for the original order, an accessible label, or the retailer's description before choosing a wet-cleaning method.

Do not scrape an edge or bend a slat to find out what it is made of. If the material remains uncertain, a gentle dry-dusting approach is the useful starting point. It lets you remove loose dust while leaving finish-specific decisions for later.

Keep shades and blinds separate in your mind. A fabric roller shade, woven-wood shade, and horizontal wood blind do not share one cleaning procedure. This guide concerns horizontal slats and their accessible surfaces, not a method for washing every window treatment.

Make the window safe to work around

Clear the sill and floor before moving the blind. Keep the window closed while you work and use stable access if the upper slats are out of reach. Do not stand on a chair, reach across a sink, or lean out of the window to get the last dusty corner.

If the headrail is loose, a bracket is pulling away, or a slat is cracked, stop before operating or cleaning it further. A cleaning session is not the right time to test how much force failing hardware can take.

Keep children and pets away from the work area and any exposed cords. Do not tie cords into improvised loops or alter the safety hardware to make dusting more convenient. Motorized blinds should be placed in the manufacturer's safe cleaning state so they cannot move unexpectedly.

Clean the slats in a sequence you can follow

Hunter Douglas recommends lowering horizontal blinds and tilting the slats almost closed, rather than fully shut, so the overlapping areas remain accessible. A soft cloth, dusting mitt, or approved brush attachment is suitable for routine dust.

  1. Start at the top. Work downward so loose dust does not fall onto slats you have already finished.
  2. Support each slat lightly. Avoid pressing against a thin edge or pulling the slat away from its ladder supports.
  3. Wipe the face. Follow the length of the slat with a clean section of cloth. Do not saw back and forth over one spot.
  4. Change the tilt. Operate the blind normally to expose the other face and the previously covered overlap.
  5. Check the ends. Remove accessible dust without digging into cord holes, lifting tape, or detaching parts.
  6. Finish the sill. Collect fallen dust with the blind still in place, keeping your cloth or vacuum away from operating hardware.

A tool that grips several slats at once can be convenient only if it fits without squeezing or bending them. If it catches on ladder cords or decorative tapes, stop using it. A single soft cloth is often easier to control around those details.

Use a vacuum gently, if allowed

Check that the brush attachment itself is clean and free of hard debris. Use light contact and an appropriate low suction setting when available. Support the slat rather than letting suction pull it toward the nozzle.

Keep a rigid crevice tool away from finished faces. It concentrates contact on a narrow edge and is easy to bump into the surface. Do not use the vacuum to pull loose tapes, straighten a bent slat, or extract debris from inside the headrail.

If the vacuum attachment will not fit without pushing the blind around, return to a cloth. The goal is controlled dust removal, not using one tool on every part.

What changes for real wood

Protect wood blinds from steam and high moisture. Do not put them in a bathtub or hose them down outside. A painted or sealed face does not establish that every edge and hardware opening tolerates a long soak.

For a fingerprint or sticky mark, ask what the finish manufacturer permits. Some stained-wood instructions mention particular maintenance products, but that should not become a blanket recommendation to apply oil or polish to every blind. An unknown finish is a reason to stay conservative.

If the finish becomes tacky, transfers color, or flakes during gentle cleaning, stop. Photograph the affected slat and contact the maker or retailer. Scrubbing harder may expand a finish problem without removing its cause.

What changes for faux wood

Faux wood is not a single material or construction. If its instructions permit damp spot cleaning, test a hidden area and use only the specified mild product and moisture level. Wipe the affected slat without wetting tapes, cords, the headrail, or motor components, and dry as directed.

A greasy kitchen blind may need a product-specific recommendation even after the dust is gone. Do not jump from “faux wood” to soaking, ultrasonic cleaning, solvents, or scrubbing cleansers. Hunter Douglas specifically cautions against those methods for its wood and alternative-wood blinds.
