“HEPA” does not mean “washable”

Find the model number and match each filter to the manual. If the instructions say “replace,” “tap clean only,” or “do not wash,” keep it dry. Guessing can swell paper media, remove treatments, or leave a filter that no longer seals.
Read the filter before you rinse it
Look for markings on the frame and compare the shape with the manual. Note whether foam and felt layers separate, whether a post-motor filter comes out, and whether the manufacturer calls for cold or warm water. Do not assume every removable part can go under the tap.
Dyson’s current cordless-filter guidance says to use water without detergent and let the filter dry for at least 24 hours. Shark likewise tells owners to rinse applicable filters with cold water and dry them completely for 24 hours, while checking model-specific intervals.
Keep dust out of the sink when you can
Turn the vacuum off and disconnect it from power or the charger. Empty the dust cup first. Take the filter outdoors or hold it over a trash bin and tap gently to remove loose dust. People sensitive to dust should avoid creating a cloud and may prefer gloves and a well-ventilated area.
Do not bang a pleated filter against a hard edge or use compressed air. Both can damage the media.
Wash the filter the manufacturer calls washable
- Remove it by the correct grip point. Do not pull on pleats or foam.

Heat is not a shortcut

An extra genuine compatible filter can keep the vacuum available while one dries, but compatibility must be checked by model.
Know when replacement is the better answer
Replace a filter that is torn, punctured, misshapen, missing a seal, smells burnt, or remains clogged after the approved cleaning. Also replace at the manual’s interval when the part is a consumable. Do not patch filter media with tape or fabric.
If suction stays weak with clean, dry, correctly installed filters, turn the machine off and check the model’s blockage path. A full dust cup, clogged hose, wrapped brush roll, air leak, or motor fault may be the real cause.
Connect filter care to the dirt source
