What the metal strips are trying to measure

That simple description explains why several unrelated problems look like a dirty sensor. A tiny load may tumble without touching both strips. A mixed load can place one heavy towel among already-dry shirts. A dryer that is not level may move fabric away from the sensing area. Restricted airflow can make the load dry unevenly. Residue on the strips is only one possibility.

Recognize a likely contact problem

Sensor care is worth checking when automatic cycles repeatedly stop with clothes still damp, continue after a familiar load feels dry, or behave differently from timed dry. Look for a dull film on the strips, especially if dryer sheets or liquid fabric softener are used often.

First rule out the basics: clean the lint screen, avoid packing the drum tightly, separate heavy and lightweight items, select a cycle intended for the fabric, and confirm the dryer stands level. If the outdoor vent flap barely opens or ordinary loads are taking longer across both sensor and timed cycles, investigate airflow instead of blaming the strips.

Find the strips without taking anything apart

Open the door after the dryer has cooled. Depending on the model, the strips may appear as two narrow metal bars near the lint-screen opening, on the front bulkhead, or along the rear area of the drum. They should be visible and reachable from the normal door opening.

If the only sensor information you find is in a service manual that begins with panel removal, stop. Homeowner cleaning does not include disconnecting a sensor harness, removing the front bulkhead, or opening a gas or electrical compartment.

A low-risk cleaning routine

  1. Empty and cool the dryer. Remove clothing and wait until the drum and nearby metal feel cool.
  2. Disconnect power. Unplug an accessible cord or switch off the identified circuit as the manual directs. Do not move a gas dryer far enough to strain its gas connection.
  3. Clean the lint screen first. Roll off lint. If the screen has invisible fabric-care residue, follow its separate deep-clean procedure and dry it completely.
  4. Remove loose lint near the strips. Use a soft vacuum brush or dry microfiber cloth. Keep the nozzle from striking the metal bars or nearby grille.

  6. Dry the area. Leave no cleaner film, fibers, or standing moisture around the strips, fasteners, or openings.
  7. Inspect without disassembly. A loose, bent, corroded, or damaged strip is a service issue.

Abrasive pads and sandpaper can scratch or remove a surface finish. Strong solvents may damage drum coatings, plastics, seals, or wiring. Do not use steel wool: fragments can remain behind and rust or create an electrical hazard.

Test with a load that can actually touch the sensor

Restore power and use a medium-sized load of similar-weight items on the recommended sensor cycle. A pair of very small garments may miss the strips and end early even when nothing is wrong. Keep notes on the selected dryness level and result rather than changing multiple settings at once.

If the model offers adjustable dryness, move one step at a time. An automatic cycle is not expected to match the minute count of timed dry; it is designed to respond to the load.

Separate sensing trouble from airflow trouble

Can I use a melamine foam pad on dryer sensors?
