Range Hood Filter Cleaning: Wash Metal, Replace Charcoal

Learn which range-hood filter can be washed, which charcoal filter must be replaced, and what weak airflow can mean after the filter is clean.

Range Hood Filter Cleaning: Wash Metal, Replace Charcoal
Lectura rápida: Revisa primero la acumulación visible y después las zonas ocultas que pueden afectar el olor, los residuos, el flujo de aire o el funcionamiento del aparato.

Quick answer: Wash a removable metal range-hood grease filter with warm water and detergent, or in the dishwasher only when the manual allows it. Let it dry completely before reinstalling. Do not wash a charcoal filter used in a recirculating hood; replace it on the model-specific schedule. Turn the hood off and let lights and cooking surfaces cool before touching either filter.

Two filters can look like one maintenance job

A ducted range hood commonly uses a metal mesh or baffle filter to catch grease before air moves outside. A recirculating hood may add a charcoal filter to reduce cooking odors before returning air to the room. The metal filter is often washable. The charcoal layer generally is not.

That difference is the heart of the task. Soaking every dark filter in the sink can ruin a charcoal filter, while throwing away a washable metal filter creates needless replacement cost.

Identify the airflow setup

Check the hood model number and manual. Look for “vented,” “ducted,” “non-vented,” or “recirculating.” Then compare the filter drawings with the parts above your cooktop. A flat aluminum mesh, stainless baffle, black foam, and charcoal cassette may have different care instructions.

Do not rely on color alone. A grease-coated metal filter can look nearly black. A combination filter may contain layers that should not be separated.

Make the area safe first

Turn off the fan and lights. Let the cooktop, bulbs, and hood surfaces cool. Move pans and food away from the work area so loosened grease cannot fall into them. Use a stable floor position or step stool; do not stand on the cooktop or counter.

If the filter release is unfamiliar, support the filter with one hand while operating the latch. Metal edges can be sharp, and a greasy filter can slip.

Wash a removable metal grease filter

  1. Remove it as shown in the manual. Note which edge enters first and which side faces the fan.
  2. Blot heavy surface grease. Use paper towel or a disposable cloth rather than sending a thick layer into the drain.
  3. Soak in warm detergent water. Use a sink or basin large enough to keep the frame flat. Avoid bending mesh or baffles.
  4. Brush gently. A soft nylon brush can work along the mesh. Do not use steel wool or pry layers apart.
  5. Rinse thoroughly. Soap left in the filter can attract soil and create odor during cooking.
  6. Dry completely. Set the filter upright on a towel until no water remains in the frame.
  7. Reinstall securely. Confirm the latch is engaged before operating the hood.

If the manual says the metal filter is dishwasher-safe, follow its rack and detergent guidance. Dishwasher cleaning can darken some aluminum finishes even when function is unaffected, so appearance expectations should come from the manufacturer.

Replace, do not rinse, a charcoal filter

Charcoal works by adsorbing odor compounds in its porous material. Washing it can saturate or break down that material. Whirlpool states that non-vented charcoal filters are not washable and should be replaced as specified in the owner’s manual.

Buy by hood model or exact part number. A filter that physically fits but blocks the wrong area can restrict airflow. Record the replacement date somewhere outside the hot, greasy hood.

What if smoke or odor remains?

A clean filter cannot correct a blocked duct, disconnected vent, failed blower, inadequate make-up air, or hood installed at the wrong height. If smoke escapes into the room, the fan makes a new sound, grease drips from inside the hood, or airflow is very weak, stop adding cleaner and use model-specific troubleshooting or service.

For an over-the-range microwave, use the separate microwave filter guide. If you are tracing a kitchen smell more broadly, start with the hidden-odor checklist.

Common questions

How often should I clean the grease filter?

Follow the manual and respond to visible grease. Cooking frequency and type matter more than a universal date. Whirlpool advises cleaning often to prevent buildup.

Can I run the hood without a filter while it dries?

No. Reinstall the clean, fully dry filter before operating the hood. The filter protects the ventilation path from grease.
