Quick answer: Check the cushion cover’s care label before removing or washing it. A zipper only means the cover can come off; it does not prove the fabric can handle a washing machine. If the label is missing or unclear, vacuum first and spot-test a hidden area instead of washing the whole cover.
Read the label and inspect the fabric
Look for washing, drying, bleaching, and ironing symbols. Note whether the cover is cotton, linen, velvet, a blend, or a fabric with a special finish. Also inspect the zipper, seams, piping, and the cushion insert. If the insert is damp, stained, or starting to smell, washing only the cover will not solve the whole problem.
Before cleaning, vacuum both sides of the cover and the exposed cushion. Use an upholstery attachment or low suction where the fabric is delicate. Remove loose crumbs and pet hair first so they do not become wet paste.
When spot cleaning makes more sense
For a small mark, use a white or colorfast cloth dampened with the recommended cleaner. Test an unseen area first and let it dry fully. Blot from the outside of the mark toward the center rather than scrubbing across the fabric. Keep the moisture controlled; a soaked cushion cover can leave a tide mark or transfer dye.
If the care label says spot-clean only, follow it. Do not improvise with bleach, strong solvent, or mixed cleaners. When the cover has a manufacturer-specific treatment, the safest cleaner may be the one named in the upholstery instructions.
If machine washing is allowed
Close the zipper and wash one cover at a time if the label permits. Use the stated cycle and temperature, and do not add more heat than the fabric can handle. Air-dry or tumble-dry only as directed. Refit the cover while it is slightly flexible, if the care instructions allow that, so it does not shrink away from the cushion.
Stop if the fabric bleeds heavily, the seam opens, or the cover shrinks enough that it no longer fits. For broad stains or an unknown fabric, an upholstery professional is usually safer than repeated home experiments.
