Quick answer: Use the water specified for your exact steam iron. Some irons are designed for untreated tap water; others call for distilled, demineralized, bottled, or a particular mix in hard-water areas. Empty the tank after use if the manual says to, let the iron cool upright, and run only the built-in self-clean or anti-calc procedure provided for that model. Never pour vinegar, fragrance, detergent, or homemade descaler into the tank unless the maker explicitly approves it.

There is no universal “best water” for every iron

Minerals can form scale, yet water with too few minerals can behave differently in some steam systems. Rowenta’s current guidance says many of its irons are designed for untreated tap water and gives a tap-and-distilled mix for very hard water. Another manufacturer may say something else. That is why a blanket rule such as “always use distilled water” can be wrong for a particular appliance.

Find the model number on the iron or rating label and read both the water section and the anti-calc section. Note any regional water-hardness guidance. Do not add starch, ironing water, essential oil, or fabric fragrance to the reservoir unless the product manual names it as compatible.

Build a low-drama after-use routine

  1. Turn off steam, unplug the iron, and keep it on a stable heat-safe surface.
  2. Allow handling only when the manual says it is safe.
  3. Empty remaining water if the manufacturer recommends empty storage.
  4. Wipe the exterior with a soft damp cloth after the iron has cooled.
  5. Stand it upright or place it on its base as directed, with the cord loose.
  6. Store only when the soleplate, tank opening, and surrounding surface are dry.

Leaving water in a model that calls for empty storage can encourage deposits or leakage. Conversely, opening valves or forcing water through a cold iron can damage seals. Use the named controls and positions; do not shake a hot appliance over the sink.

Use self-clean and anti-calc features, not kitchen chemistry

If the iron has a self-clean function, follow its fill level, heat setting, sink position, and button timing. Steam and hot water may discharge suddenly, so keep hands away from the soleplate and holes. Some models have a removable anti-calc valve or collector; remove it only when the instructions say the iron is unplugged and cold.

Stop when maintenance becomes repair

Unplug and stop using the iron if the cord is damaged, the housing is cracked, it was dropped, water reaches electrical areas, the temperature control behaves unpredictably, or the iron leaks while stored as directed. Persistent brown discharge after the approved self-clean cycle also deserves manufacturer support. Do not open the body or replace internal seals as a cleaning step.

Separate water-quality clues from fabric residue

Scale tends to appear as pale mineral flakes or restricted steam, while scorched starch or transferred fabric can mark the soleplate. The distinction matters because the tank and soleplate have different cleaning rules. Empty the reservoir into a clear sink or cup only when the manual permits; visible particles can help customer support understand the symptom. Do not taste, smell closely, or handle discharged hot water.

If problems appear only after switching water sources, note the change and compare it with the manual’s hardness guidance. If spots appear only on one garment, check the fabric treatment and ironing temperature too. Keep a photo of the model label and the page that describes water choice. That small record prevents a well-meaning household member from refilling the tank with scented ironing water or a homemade mix that the appliance was not designed to use.
