Why the answer depends on the rack
Oven racks can have different finishes, coatings, and sliding hardware. A rack may fit physically inside a dishwasher and still come out dull, discolored, or harder to slide. The dishwasher’s heat, detergent, and spray action are not equally suitable for every rack.
Look for the model number on the oven frame or in the owner’s manual. If the manual says the rack is safe for a dishwasher, follow the loading and detergent instructions it gives. If it does not address the question, a gentle hand clean is the lower-risk choice.
Hand-washing is the safe default
Let the rack cool completely before removing it. Protect the sink or tub with a towel if the rack is heavy or has sharp corners. Soak it in warm water with a small amount of mild dish soap, then use a soft cloth or non-abrasive brush on the baked-on areas.
Do not force a sliding rack, bend the rails, or scrape the finish with a knife. Rinse well and dry all surfaces, including the rail joints, before putting the rack back. Water left in a sliding mechanism can make the rack feel rough even when the visible surface looks clean.
If you do use the dishwasher
Only do so when the manufacturer allows it. Check that the rack does not block the spray arm, prevent the dishwasher door from closing, or touch the heating element. Do not place an oven rack in the dishwasher just because a similar rack survived a previous cycle.
