Check whether your dishwasher filter is removable
Look up the model number from the door edge, tub frame or rating label. A removable filter may sit under the lower rack and combine a cylinder with flat mesh. Other designs differ: LG notes exceptions to its illustrated three-stage system, and Whirlpool documents maintenance-free filtration.
Turn the machine off, let it cool and remove the dishes. Slide out the lower rack without leaning on the door; move a spray arm only as the manual directs. Have a floor towel ready. Glass, bones and other sharp scraps can be caught with food, so use sturdy cleaning or cut-resistant gloves when appropriate and avoid squeezing the mesh.
Remove, rinse, and reinstall the filter in order
- Photograph the original layers, handle, arrows, tabs and spray-arm position.
- Unlock with the manual's light-pressure release. Many filters turn counterclockwise, but follow this model's marks. Stop if it resists; lift level so debris does not fall into the sump.
- Tip food into the trash, then rinse both sides with warm running water. Use a soft brush or nonabrasive sponge where permitted, keeping fingers on sturdy plastic rather than fragile mesh.
- Wipe loose accessible particles from the filter-well rim with a damp cloth. Keep hands and tools out of pumps, unfamiliar covers and drains unless the manual supplies an owner procedure.
- Return every layer to its original position and confirm the specified arrow, lock mark or click. If permitted, turn the spray arm by hand to confirm clearance.
Bosch allows mild soap and a soft brush for its referenced removable filters. LG specifies running water and nonabrasive cleaning. Use the detergent and cleaning tool your model permits for greasy residue. Keep any approved brushing away from seams and tabs, without enlarging mesh holes or scraping a layer that may be part of the filter.
Wire brushes, steel wool, knives, picks, bleach, drain or oven cleaner and strong all-purpose chemicals can damage the assembly. Use gentle friction with the approved cleaner, without mixing products or improvising a soak.
Confirm the filter lock before running the dishwasher
Loose filtration can recirculate debris or interfere with a spray arm. LG warns that incorrect assembly reduces performance. Replace the rack and run the recommended test or cycle only after the filter is secure. A cracked housing or a filter that will not lock needs support.
Standing water, glass below the owner-accessible area, a jammed pump, unusual pump noise, a leak or a recurring drainage error needs the appropriate service. When your filter needs another cleaning
Use the model's schedule, with an earlier look for visible food, grit on dishes, closed-door odor, slower drainage or a filter message. Load frequency, food preparation and water conditions affect that timing. Bosch gives every-few-months guidance for some removable systems. LG varies advice by use and can call for at least monthly cleaning on applicable hard-water models.
Scrape large food pieces before loading; Bosch recommends scraping for its machines without assuming that pre-rinsing is required. If a cleaned, locked filter leaves poor results, look at spray-arm clearance, crowded loading and detergent instructions. Inspect a safely visible drain-hose kink without dismantling plumbing.

Use the exact model's arrows or instructions. Similar-looking filter layers may release and reassemble differently, and some filtration systems are not owner-removable.
Should a cleaning tablet replace filter washing?
No. Lift out trapped food by the model's approved filter method first. An internal cleaner treats a different residue task and must be compatible with the dishwasher.
