Dishwasher Cleaning

Why Your Dishwasher Smells After a Cycle

An odor after washing can call for food removal, surface wiping, or drainage diagnosis. Recurring smells and fault symptoms need more than another tablet.

TL;DR: A dishwasher can smell after a cycle because food remains near the door or filter, residue persists inside, or water has failed to drain. Note when the smell appears and whether it is sour, stale, chemical, or overheated so the next action fits the symptom.

Food residue at the lower door edge and filter

With the machine off, inspect the lower seal, door corners, filter, spray-arm openings, racks, and utensil areas. Lift fallen food, labels, and loose objects from visible surfaces. Wipe the lower seal in place and clear spray-arm particles by the approved method.

Rinse and refit an owner-removable filter as described in the filter cleaning guide. Look below it without reaching into unseen openings. The door-edge guide covers film at the gasket and lower lip that a normal wash can leave behind.

Retained water and the dishwasher drain path

The filter-well water guide distinguishes model-dependent retained water from a drainage problem. Look for standing water and loose visible debris, keeping tools out of the unseen drain path.

An air gap or high loop, if fitted, has its own appliance or plumbing instructions. Work only on identified owner-serviceable connections; leave an unfamiliar drain hose installed. If the smell spreads beyond the dishwasher, the appliance odor guide helps separate nearby sources.

Interior film after trapped food has been removed

Wipe remaining accessible soil with warm water and a soft cloth or brush. For a compatible machine, GOHALL dishwasher-cleaner tablets go in a separate empty-machine cycle, with the box's dose and the model's permitted procedure. Leave out dish detergent and other chemicals, including bleach, vinegar, and drain cleaner.

Cleaning and disinfecting are separate jobs; odor alone does not establish a need for disinfectant. Use the model's one recommended maintenance or rinse cycle, then check water left in the tub, moisture underneath, unusually dirty dishes, and new sounds. Repeating hot or chemical cycles will not locate a drainage or component fault.

Recurring odor, electrical smells, and service symptoms

Recurrence after proper cleaning needs service guidance. Leave the machine off for pump grinding or humming, a burnt or electrical smell, leaks, drainage failure, or an error code. Increasing the dose cannot correct those faults.

Questions about dishwasher odors

Why can the door edge stay dirty after a wash?

Food can remain at the lower seal and corners. Wipe those accessible areas separately without pulling the gasket loose.

Should a bad smell be treated with disinfectant?

An odor does not establish that need. Use the appliance's cleaning instructions and any separately approved disinfecting procedure.

Can I use a machine-cleaning tablet with dishes inside?

GOHALL dishwasher cleaner requires a separate empty-machine cycle without dish detergent. Follow its label and your dishwasher's cleaner procedure.
