TL;DR: Clean dishwasher spray arms by checking their clearance and rinsing visible debris from the jets with your model's permitted method. If one area of the rack stays dirty, look for a blocking dish or trapped particle. Detergent, water temperature, loading, cycle choice, and filter condition can still explain poor washing elsewhere.
Check spray-arm clearance and the model-specific release
Turn the dishwasher off before checking rotation. Look for food, mineral residue, or loose labels at the openings, and check for cracks, looseness, or warping. Tall dishes and utensils must clear the arm.
Some arms lift off; others unscrew or have a retaining cap or clip. Use the release in your model's manual and put any loose hardware in a dish away from the drain. If the arm resists that method, leave it installed and clean its accessible surfaces.
Flush visible debris without changing jet size or direction
- Rinse the outside with warm water and hold the arm to the light where possible.
- Use a soft nylon brush around the openings and central support.
- For a visible blockage, use a tool only if the manual permits it. A blunt plastic pick or wooden toothpick suits only a model that allows that method. Lift the particle out without pushing it deeper.
- Rinse through the arm from several directions while debris emerges.
- Reinstall it as directed and confirm that it turns freely without rubbing the rack or dishes.
Jet size and direction control where the water goes. A drill bit, wire, knife, or other sharp tool can alter the opening. Chemicals cannot replace flushing loose particles out: use only an approved product, keep drain cleaner and undiluted bleach out, and never mix cleaners.
If washing remains uneven after spray-arm cleaning
Review rack position, detergent dose, cycle choice, and filter cleanliness and seating before choosing another treatment. The dishwasher filter guide explains permitted removal without forcing the assembly. For residue that fits an approved machine-cleaning cycle, see where tablets and physical cleaning help.
An arm that will not spin, a new grinding sound, or drainage failure needs service guidance. A damaged support or loose pump cover also needs its own repair.
Spray-arm cleaning question
What should I do if the arm will not release?
Leave it installed for accessible-surface cleaning. Forcing an unfamiliar cap or clip can damage the support; use the procedure for your exact model.
