Two cloudy glasses may have different problems

Mineral film sits on the surface. Etching changes the surface itself. GE distinguishes white mineral buildup from the permanent milky appearance of etched glassware. Their remedies are therefore different: a cleaner can remove some deposits, but it cannot rebuild damaged glass.

A photograph alone may not settle the question. Reflections, fingerprints, drying marks, and water inside a glass can all change its appearance. Start with one ordinary glass you can inspect easily. Set aside decorated pieces, crystal, antique glass, and anything whose maker restricts dishwasher use or acidic cleaners.

Do not include chipped or cracked glasses in a cleaning experiment. Handle damaged pieces carefully and remove them from use.

Wash one glass before testing it

Use normal hand-washing directions for the glass, rinse away detergent, and dry with a clean soft cloth. Look at the inside and outside separately. If the haze vanishes after ordinary washing, there is no reason to proceed to a stronger treatment.

If it remains, record what you see in the same light before and after the next permitted step. A small comparison is easier to interpret than a sinkful of glasses treated with different mixtures.

Check that the drying cloth is not introducing film. A towel used with fabric softener or a cloth still carrying kitchen grease can complicate the result. Wash or replace the cloth before judging the glass.

A limited mineral-film check

GE's water-softener guidance describes washing a glass with white vinegar and water to distinguish removable cloudiness from etching. Use that idea only on glass whose care instructions allow it. Keep the test small, use household white vinegar rather than concentrated cleaning acid, and stop if the finish changes.

  1. Choose a plain, intact glass that has already been washed and rinsed.
  2. Follow its maker's permitted diluted-vinegar method on a small area, away from decoration or metal trim.
  3. Rinse thoroughly and dry with a clean soft cloth.
  4. Compare the treated area with the rest of the glass in the same lighting.

If the area clears, a removable deposit is likely. If it does not, etching is possible, but do not diagnose every unchanged mark from one home test. Ask the glass maker if the result is uncertain. Do not increase acid strength, add baking soda, or use abrasive polishing powder to force a difference.

If the film is removable

Use a cleaning method approved by both the glassware maker and the dishwasher manufacturer. GE publishes procedures for mineral film, but those model and treatment instructions should not be transplanted into another dishwasher automatically.

Do not add a descaler to a normal detergent cycle unless the exact product and appliance instructions require that combination. Keep metal utensils and decorated items out of a treatment when directed. Never combine an acid treatment with chlorine bleach or another cleaner.

Before changing detergent, check whether the water supply is hard or softened. Use local water information or the method recommended by the dishwasher maker instead of guessing from one glass. Dose according to the detergent and machine instructions. If a softener was recently installed, the old dosing habit may no longer fit the water.

If the glass is etched

GE identifies etching as permanent and connects its prevention with appropriate detergent concentration, proper fill, and suitable cycles. Increasing heat or adding extra detergent simply because a glass looks dirty can be the wrong response.

Check the glassware care label and the dishwasher's guidance for delicate items. Use a cycle that cleans the permitted load without adding unnecessary intensity. Do not change the household water-heater temperature as a casual response to cloudy glasses; follow appliance instructions and obtain appropriate advice.

Keep the affected glass out of further experiments while protecting the rest of the set. Ask the glass maker about continued use if the surface condition concerns you. A cosmetic assessment here is not a food-safety certification.

Also note whether only one style of glass is affected. Different ages, decorations, and manufacturer care requirements can make a mixed set behave differently. That pattern is useful information for the glass maker, but it is not proof that the dishwasher detergent is safe for every remaining piece.

Make one change and watch the next ordinary load

Write down the detergent, cycle, water-softener status, and which pieces are affected. Then change only the factor supported by the instructions. That way, if the next load improves or worsens, you have something meaningful to compare.

If food grit, undissolved detergent, or widespread poor washing accompanies the haze, inspect the accessible maintenance items separately. Stop troubleshooting and request service for persistent fill errors, leaking, unusual noises, or a machine that does not complete its cycle. Do not pour a sequence of cleaners into a dishwasher that may have a mechanical problem.
