Quick answer: Switch the vacuum off, unplug it or remove the battery, empty the bin, and follow the model’s airflow path from floor head to wand, hose, inlet, and filters. Detach only quick-release parts shown in the manual. Look through rigid tubes and remove visible debris with your fingers or a blunt flexible cleaning tool approved by the maker. Never stab the hose with wire, a knife, or a screwdriver. Replace a split hose or damaged seal; stop if the machine overheated, smells burned, or has exposed wiring.

Weak suction does not automatically mean a hose clog

A full bin, loaded filter, sealed floor head, stuck changeover valve, air leak, or blocked wand can feel identical at the handle. Start with the conditions you can observe. Did the sound change suddenly after picking up a sock? Does suction return when the tool is removed? Is there a whistle, collapsed hose, or dust escaping from a joint?

Dyson troubleshooting treats a whistle as a possible air leak from a missing seal or blockage and separates hose checks from wand, duct, bin, and cyclone checks. That is a useful principle across brands: isolate one section at a time rather than forcing an object through the entire machine.

Power down before opening the airflow path

  1. Turn the machine off and disconnect mains power or the removable battery.
  2. Let an overheated vacuum cool for the period in its manual.
  3. Empty the dust bin or replace the bag so it cannot spill during inspection.
  4. Remove the floor tool, wand, and hose only at their intended releases.
  5. Place small clips and seals where they cannot fall into the bin.

Do not work with the vacuum running to “pull the clog through” while your fingers are near an inlet. Motorized brush heads can restart, and a plugged machine may have hot components. Never test suction with filters removed unless the manufacturer’s troubleshooting flow explicitly requires a brief test and says how to do it.

Use light and gravity before a probe

Hold a rigid wand toward a light. If you cannot see through it, rotate the tube and tap its outside gently with your palm. For a detached flexible hose, extend it without overstretching and look through each end. A soft obstruction near an opening may come out by hand. A blunt, flexible manufacturer-approved tool can help only if it cannot snag corrugations or puncture the wall.

Avoid broom handles, metal coat hangers, drain snakes, skewers, and compressed air. Rigid objects can compact debris at a bend; metal can pierce the hose or damage hidden conductors in powered hoses. Compressed air may launch debris toward eyes or drive dust into joints.

Check the hose itself, not just what is inside it

Flex the hose gently while inspecting it in bright light. Look for pinholes, a cuff pulling away, flattened corrugations, or a missing gasket. Tape is not a reliable repair for a powered or high-suction hose and can hide progressive damage. Order by full model number.

Reassemble and retest in a clean order

Seat every cuff until it clicks, close access bends, and reinstall dry filters and the bin. Test on a small area with no loose cord, fabric, or large debris. If suction is still weak, stop cycling the motor and continue with the maker’s diagnostic steps. Trace airflow section by section, with power disconnected and only model-approved parts removed. Let every washed component dry completely before reassembly. Light, gravity, and a gentle reach beat a sharp probe. A split hose, missing seal, repeated overheat, electrical damage, or a clog beyond safe reach is a replacement or service issue, not a reason to push harder.
