TL;DR: A smell after drying can begin in the laundry, washer or dryer. Heating can reveal an existing odor. Use timing to choose the next check.
For smoke, stop using the dryer and seek emergency help when needed. An electrical smell needs shutdown at the identified dryer circuit and service; do not run a test load.
If you suspect a gas leak, leave immediately without operating switches or appliances. Contact your gas utility from a safe location; call 911 if there is immediate danger. SoCalGas explains these precautions.
What changed when the clothes became warm?
Samsung’s U.S. odor guidance explains that some smells are difficult to notice in cold, wet laundry and become apparent with heat. That timing alone cannot identify the dryer as the source.
Keep a short record: when the odor first appears, whether the load waited wet, and whether the empty washer or cool dryer also smells. Check the appliances separately; do not run repeated cycles just to make the smell stronger.
A washer odor deserves its own compatible empty-machine cleaning process. Machine-cleaning tablets belong in that approved empty cycle, never in a load of clothes.
Slower cycles add a second question
Record any change in drying performance alongside the odor. The guide to longer drying cycles separates load and setting checks from airflow and service issues. A long cycle does not establish that a dirty duct caused the smell.
GE Appliances notes that accumulated lint can give an installed dryer a musty or burning odor. That makes permitted lint care relevant, but it does not prove the cause of your load’s smell.
Identify the dryer before choosing a tool
Look up the exact model’s maintenance instructions. An exterior exhaust route and a ventless dryer’s care system require different access. Our ventless-dryer tool-fit guide explains why a duct-cleaning rod should not be inserted into a ventless appliance.
Reachable lint has a defined cleaning method
The U.S. Fire Administration recommends lint-filter care before and after each cycle and checking for damaged, crushed or restricted venting. Keep the filter installed for operation.
When the dryer manual permits owner access, a GOHALL Dryer Vent Vacuum Attachment can collect loose, dry lint from reachable openings. First turn the dryer off, let it cool and disconnect power as directed. Leave cabinet panels and protected components closed for qualified service.
Connection fit matters. Follow the product’s complete Method A chain, including its vacuum adapter, or the Method B connection through your vacuum’s own fitted crevice tool. The vacuum-attachment guide carries the assemblies and access limits. Do not use it to suction water or force an inaccessible blockage.
Check a coated or wet screen using its approved residue-cleaning method. Reinstall only an intact, fully dry screen seated correctly. Cleaning accessible lint cannot repair a heater, sensor or damaged exhaust route.
Recent work in the room can matter
Whirlpool’s compact heat-pump dryer guidance flags nearby painting, staining or varnishing as a possible odor source. Avoid operating the dryer during that work and wait until the fumes have cleared. Do not use dryer heat to remove fumes.
If there is visible residue inside the cool drum, follow the drum-residue guide and the model-approved method. Keep sprays out of intake holes, grilles and the exhaust. Unknown oily or potentially flammable contamination needs assessment before use.
Questions about odor after drying
Will a lint-cleaning attachment deodorize clothes?
No. It removes reachable dry lint where the dryer permits that access. It does not treat fabric, confirm the odor source or guarantee the smell will disappear.
Should I use a hotter cycle to get rid of the smell?
Use the permitted cycle and garment label. Burning or electrical smells need assessment, rather than another heated trial.
