TL;DR: A garbage disposal that hums without grinding may have a jammed turntable. Switch it off, stop the water, and check the model's jam-release instructions before trying again. A cleaner tablet cannot free a mechanical jam, and repeatedly switching the motor on can trip its overload protection.
A hum can turn into silence
The humming motor and a completely silent disposal can be stages of the same problem. Moen explains that a stuck grinding mechanism may initially hum; repeated attempts to run it can trip the internal breaker, leaving the unit silent. Silence after humming does not establish that the jam has cleared. Moen's unjamming guide covers that sequence.
Before checking for an object or using a jam-release tool, isolate power as the model requires: unplug a cord-connected unit safely, or shut off its circuit at the electrical panel for a hardwired unit. Keep hands out of the grinding chamber. If the cabinet is wet, an electrical connection is damaged, or there is a burning smell, leave the unit off and arrange service instead of reaching underneath it.
The wrench and reset method depend on the disposal
Find the model number and its manual while the unit is off. A bottom wrench socket, a red reset button, and a removable splash guard are separate features. Having one does not tell you how the others work.
InSinkErator models with a bottom wrench socket and manual reset
The InSinkErator care manual linked here describes this particular arrangement. With power isolated and water off, its jam-release sequence uses the self-service wrench in the center hole beneath the disposal, moving it back and forth until it completes one revolution. Remove the wrench, then use long-handled tongs or pliers to remove an accessible object. Never reach in with your fingers.
That manual then calls for a three- to five-minute motor cool-down before gently pressing the red reset button. Use your own model's timing and procedure if they differ. This method applies to a matching disposal; a hole or screw elsewhere on the housing is not a substitute socket.
InSinkErator EZ Connect and other automatic-overload models
Current InSinkErator jam guidance separates EZ Connect from older manual-reset units. EZ Connect uses a bottom wrenchette for the jam and an automatic overload switch for recovery. It describes up to 20 minutes of cooling with the wall switch off, or with the disposal off and unplugged when controlled by a push-button air switch. Continue to keep power isolated while removing an object or using the wrench.
The same support page gives Builder Series, Amana, and ES units a different turntable-release method and automatic-overload instructions. Match that section to your model instead of searching for a red button it may not have.
Moen's top-entry unjamming method
Moen's current support procedure uses its purpose-made unjamming wrench through the sink opening after disconnecting power. It distinguishes removable splash guards from integrated guards, which stay installed. The reset location and tool access differ from the InSinkErator bottom-wrench example. Follow the complete procedure for a matching Moen model, including removing the tool and securing an approved removed guard before restoring power.
If the disposal still will not grind
Clear tools from the sink opening, refit any approved removed parts, and use only the restart check your manual specifies. Switch off again if the motor still hums. If the mechanism will not move through its permitted jam-release method, an object is beyond safe tool access, or the unit repeatedly shuts down, contact the manufacturer or a qualified appliance professional. Electrical diagnosis belongs with a qualified electrician; do not open the wiring compartment to investigate.
Standing water is also a drainage problem to resolve before cleaning. The GOHALL disposal cleaner is for residue and odor in a working, compatible unit. Its current directions explicitly exclude clearing a blocked drain or repairing a jam. Once normal operation and drainage are restored, the tablet-use guide explains the separate cleaning treatment. Cleaner and disposal instructions must both allow it.
Questions about a humming disposal
Should I keep pressing the reset button?
Resetting does not release a stuck turntable. For InSinkErator's manual-reset units, its reset guidance says to wait ten minutes if the button will not stay up. A button that continues to trip or a motor that still hums needs further diagnosis, not repeated powered attempts.
Can I pull out the splash guard to see better?
Only when the exact model has an approved removable guard, with power isolated. An integrated guard stays in place. The splash-guard guide explains that distinction. Keep hands out whether the guard is fitted or removed.
Does a free-turning mechanism mean the motor is fixed?
No. Moen's owner instructions distinguish a jammed turntable from electrical or internal problems that can require service. Report whether it turns freely by the approved method and whether the restart produces humming, silence, or normal grinding.
