TL;DR: Ice does not sharpen garbage disposal blades. InSinkErator and Moen explain that their disposals use grinding components, without knife-like blades to sharpen. Some manufacturers include ice in a cleaning method. Follow your model's care instructions, and treat a humming motor or backed-up sink as a separate problem.
What actually grinds the food?
Inside an InSinkErator disposal, rotating lugs push food against a stationary grind ring. The ring breaks it into particles that water carries away. Its official FAQ explains the mechanism. Moen also rejects the ice-sharpening claim; its disposals use impellers to move food toward the grinding surface.
You do not need a blade-sharpening routine for those designs. That does not make the chamber safe to touch. Keep fingers and hands out, including when the disposal is switched off.
Ice can have a cleaning role
The InSinkErator Complete care manual lists ice among materials that create a scouring action inside its grind chamber. That is the reason to consider ice on a matching unit. It does not mean ice sharpens an edge, repairs worn parts, or restores a jammed motor.
Use your exact model's permitted method, including its water flow and installed splash guard. InSinkErator's FAQ includes an ice-cleaning method with a medium stream of cold water. This is manufacturer-specific guidance; it does not establish an ice quantity or cleaning recipe for every disposal.
If you were reaching for ice because of a smell
Food residue can collect on the underside of the rubber splash guard. A smell near the sink opening may also come from the stopper or flange, so identify the part that needs cleaning before treating the chamber.
Use the splash-guard guide to distinguish a removable guard from an integrated one. Isolate power before approved hands-on part care: safely unplug a cord-connected unit or switch off its circuit for a hardwired disposal. Refit an approved removed guard before powered use. For residue around the metal opening, see the stopper and sink-flange guide.
In a normally operating, compatible disposal, GOHALL Garbage Disposal Cleaner & Deodorizer Tablets help loosen food residue and address the odors it holds. Use them only when the disposal's instructions allow the cleaner and its required treatment. The tablet-use guide covers the separate empty-disposal cycle and rinse. It is not a sharpening treatment, and it cannot open a blocked drain or repair a jam.
A humming motor needs a different answer
If the disposal hums without grinding, switch it off rather than adding ice or cleaner. Repeated powered attempts can trip overload protection, as Moen's jam guidance explains. Follow the model-specific jam and reset checks; keep power isolated during approved object removal. Persistent humming, repeated shutdowns, or leakage need diagnosis or service. Resolve standing water and drainage trouble before cleaning.
Questions about ice and disposal care
Should I fill the disposal with a whole bag of ice?
Do not assume a bag is the right amount. Use the quantity and method your model's manufacturer specifies. An ice-cleaning recommendation for one disposal does not establish a universal dose.
Can I add ice to a GOHALL tablet cycle?
Follow the GOHALL directions as written, starting with an empty disposal. Keep the tablet treatment separate from an ice routine or a DIY mixture, and do not add another cleaner. Complete its specified rinse.
