How to Clean a Reusable Coffee Filter and Basket

Reusable filter care includes removing grounds, washing approved parts, and checking mesh and rim damage. A clean basket that still overflows needs separate troubleshooting.

TL;DR: To clean a reusable coffee filter, discard the grounds and wash the filter and support basket by the brewer’s approved method. Coffee oils can cling to the mesh and rim. Let the machine cool and unplug it before removing parts listed for owner cleaning; the brewer’s internal cleaning or descaling program remains a separate job.

Wash the filter, basket, and approved cover

  1. Discard the grounds and lift the insert from its support basket. Remove a basket cover only if the manual lists it for cleaning.
  2. Wash the parts by the permitted method and rinse thoroughly.
  3. Let the pieces dry before putting them back.

For its DGB625BCU, Cuisinart allows the Gold Tone filter, basket, and basket cover to be washed in warm soapy water or on the upper dishwasher rack. Check the same permission for your own brewer's pieces before using the dishwasher.

Inspect the mesh and rim before reassembly

Hold the clean filter in good light and inspect both faces. Replace it if a crease is split, a seam is loose, or the rim is cracked. Avoid poking blocked mesh holes with pins, which can change their size. Wash the water reservoir and glass carafe by their own care methods.

If the clean filter basket still overflows

Stop the brew if the basket overflows and let the hot liquid cool before opening it. Check that the insert sits correctly and that the grounds and filter arrangement match the manual. If the assembly is intact, clean, and correctly fitted but still overflows, follow the manufacturer's troubleshooting before running another full batch.

Reusable-filter question

Can I use the dishwasher for any reusable filter?

Only when your model permits it for the specific insert, basket, or cover. One brewer's upper-rack permission does not establish heat compatibility for another filter.
