TL;DR: A Clean Washer light or LG tCL message can be a maintenance reminder. Read the exact message and your model's instructions before treating it as a fault. A reminder disappearing does not prove the tub was cleaned, and a cleaning tablet will not fix a draining or control problem.
What the message actually says
Write down the letters or cycle name shown on the panel. Clean Washer, Self Clean and tCL can identify scheduled tub care. Another code on the same machine may require a different response. A picture of the display and the model number will help you find the right instructions.
LG's U.S. top-load code guide identifies tCL as a Tub Clean reminder. It says selecting another cycle or pressing another button dismisses that notice. That action closes the reminder; it does not perform the cleaning cycle. LG also says notification behavior can vary by model.
Why a clean light can turn off without cleaning
Some washers count completed laundry cycles. The notice may appear even when the drum looks clean, or stop flashing after you continue washing.
For the Whirlpool models covered by owner's manual W11355369, revision D, the Clean Washer with affresh message flashes after 30 wash cycles. If that care cycle is skipped, the message stops flashing after three more regular wash cycles. It returns after another 30. The manual notes that some models lack this reminder.
Those counts explain the display behavior in that manual. They are not a schedule for every washer. Keep a simple record of the care cycle you actually completed instead of using an unlit panel as proof of maintenance.
Choose the cleaning method before adding a tablet
The reminder names a job. Your washer's care instructions determine the permitted cleaner and cycle.
Samsung's Self Clean guidance says its reminder appears after 20 washes on top-load models or 40 on front-load models. It directs you to run the cycle with an empty washer and says a cleaner is not needed. Samsung recommends completing Self Clean at the earliest opportunity after the reminder. Do not add a tablet simply because that light is blinking.
Whirlpool's manual above specifies affresh tablets or its stated bleach procedure for interior care. That wording does not approve a different brand. LG's tub-cleaning guide permits a washing-machine tub cleaner and directs tablet placement into the drum, but your exact model's manual still governs the procedure.
GOHALL washer-cleaning tablets fit machines that permit a tablet cleaner and the listed cycle. The current directions call for one unwrapped tablet directly in an empty drum, used alone on Clean Washer or a permitted hot Normal cycle. Do not add detergent, bleach or another cleaner. Use the washer-tablet guide to check placement and finish instructions. If the appliance's requirements and the product directions do not agree, follow the appliance's permitted method.
When the reminder needs a different response
If you already ran the correct maintenance program, confirm that it finished. A canceled cycle may need its own drain or rinse recovery; the interrupted cleaning-cycle guide explains why that procedure must match the model. Keep laundry out while cleaning solution remains, and do not force a locked door.
LG's top-load code guide directs owners to request service if tCL persists after a completed Tub Clean cycle. For another washer, use its documented response to a persistent notice. Repeated doses, guessed button combinations and repeated unplugging are not a substitute for that check.
A washer that also fails to drain, leaks or shows a different fault code needs the instructions for that symptom. Our washer drainage guide distinguishes an owner-accessible filter from a service task. A tub-care tablet cannot repair the pump or controls.
Questions about cleaning reminders
Does tCL mean the washer is broken?
LG identifies tCL as a Tub Clean reminder in its top-load guidance. Check the exact code: similar-looking letters and other models may have different meanings. A persistent notice after the completed care cycle warrants the manufacturer's next step.
Can I clear the reminder and wash a load?
Some models allow dismissal or continued laundry cycles. Use your model's directions, then plan the required maintenance. Dismissing a notice does not clean the tub. If a cleaning cycle has already started, follow its completion or cancellation instructions before adding clothing.
Why does it return when the washer looks clean?
A reminder can follow a cycle count, as in the Whirlpool and Samsung examples above. It does not establish a visible stain or measure how much residue is inside your washer.
