Ice Maker Cleaning

Cleaning the Opal Ultra Rear Air Filter

Air-filter care and reservoir cleaning are separate tasks. Follow the Ultra’s permitted hand-wash method before returning it to use.

TL;DR: A GE Opal 2.0 Ultra’s rear air filter needs separate hand cleaning. Switch off and unplug before handling it. Wash, rinse and let it dry; refit before use. A water-path cleaning cycle does not wash it.

Check which filter you are looking at

“Filter” can mean two different parts on the same ice maker. The Opal Ultra has a rear air filter; an installed water filter sits in the reservoir. The XPIO-series manual limits this rear-filter care to Ultra models.

A reservoir cartridge or a completed cleaning program does not tell you whether the rear filter is clean. Find your model number and its parts diagram before pulling on a rear grille. These Ultra instructions do not authorize removing a panel or reaching the fan or condenser on another ice maker.

Wash, dry and refit the Ultra filter

GE’s Ultra rear-filter guidance calls for checking and cleaning it at least every two months. For this approved hand-care job, turn the ice maker off and unplug it with dry hands before handling the filter.

  1. Gently pull the filter up and out by its handle.
  2. Wash with warm, soapy water; no dishwasher.
  3. Rinse, let it dry, then refit it.

Do not run without the filter: GE warns that dirt and lint can clog the condenser and reduce performance. Keep the cabinet assembled; a stuck or damaged part needs manufacturer guidance.

Keep airflow care separate from water-path care

The rear filter has a different job from mineral-removal cleaning. GOHALL Ice Machine Cleaner Tablets help address mineral deposits and everyday buildup in compatible dedicated standalone machines. They do not clean the air filter or repair a fan, condenser or refrigeration fault.

GE’s current manual names Opal Citric Acid Powder Descaler for reservoir descaling. It does not establish GOHALL approval. For a confirmed compatible machine, follow the standalone cleaner and rinsing directions, including every manufacturer-required rinse and ice discard. Refrigerator and freezer ice makers are excluded.

Keep the model’s ventilation gaps clear; our countertop placement guide covers the separate space requirements.

If approved care does not restore performance, contact GE with the model number and display status. Repeated cleaner cycles cannot diagnose the rear filter.

Air-filter question

Can it run without the filter?

No. Keep the machine off and unplugged while it dries. GE prohibits running the Ultra without it.
