TL;DR: A water-connected standalone ice maker needs a shutdown plan for its water supply and drain, as well as cleaning. Emptying the ice bin does not drain those lines. Before a long absence or possible freezing, find the exact model's procedure and arrange any required service. A cleaning tablet cannot winterize the machine.
Identify the installation before choosing a shutdown method
A plumbed undercounter machine has a different job from a portable unit you fill by hand. Record the model number, whether the installation has a drain pump, and whether the room will stay heated. Use the countertop storage guide only for its portable-machine scope.
Whirlpool's freestanding ice-maker guidance separates vacation preparation from moving. Vacation preparation includes shutting off water and power, removing ice and cleaning. Moving adds water-line and water-pan drainage; a drain pump has its own branch. Do not copy a pump procedure from a gravity-drain model or assume unplugging empties the pump.
Freezing changes the work, even when the machine is off
Sub-Zero's UC-15I instructions call for prolonged shutdown and winterization when the unit will be unused for an extended period or exposed to 32°F (0°C) or below. The procedure addresses water remaining in the reservoir, supply lines, pump outlet and drain route. It also requires electrical disconnection at the circuit breaker or service panel and shutting off the water supply.
This includes work beyond a bin wash. Sub-Zero assigns UC15I water-valve servicing to Factory Certified Service. Arrange that help before leaving; do not open a valve or disconnect hidden tubing simply because the machine looks dry. Sub-Zero also prohibits antifreeze in the ice maker or water line.
Keep cleaning and line drainage as separate tasks
The UC-15I shutdown procedure starts with its cleaning and sanitizing process. Its care guide requires cleaner and sanitizer made for that ice maker. That instruction does not approve a substitute tablet. Keep the specified products, stages and rinses separate.
GOHALL ice-machine tablets are for compatible dedicated standalone machines whose manufacturers permit the cleaner and method. They address mineral deposits and everyday buildup, without draining retained water or providing freeze protection. They also do not replace a separate sanitizing requirement. The standalone cleaner and rinse guide explains that compatibility check. Refrigerator and freezer ice makers are excluded.
Keep the restart instructions with the shutdown record
Record which supply and drain work was completed and who completed it. Keep the matching restart instructions available. Sub-Zero's UC-15I shutdown guidance requires discarding and replacing the water filter before startup. A cleaned bin alone does not establish that a disconnected supply or drain is ready for use.
Shutdown question
Is turning off the water enough if I leave the machine running?
No. Sub-Zero warns that retained water can still freeze and cause damage. Follow the complete shutdown procedure for the standalone model, including its power and drainage requirements.
