TL;DR: On the Whirlpool freestanding ice makers covered by its support guidance, a blinking Clean light can mean cleaning is running or was interrupted. Check the exact model's completion instructions before restarting ice production. Clearing a light does not establish that the cleaner and rinses are finished.
Read the wording before resetting anything
A maintenance prompt and a cycle in progress need different responses. Whirlpool's W11390951B quick-start guide treats “Cleaning Needed” as a request for the ice maker's specified cleaning procedure.
Its blinking-light guidance says Clean blinks while cleaning runs and can keep blinking after an interruption. Note the displayed words, whether a cycle started and whether it stopped. Use the model number to find the matching instructions; this is not a reset procedure for a refrigerator ice maker or a GE Opal.
If the cleaning cycle stopped midway
For the freestanding machines in Whirlpool's interrupted-cycle guidance, pressing Clean resumes the interrupted cycle. The page identifies the illuminated “Cleaning Complete” light as completion, at approximately 70 to 90 minutes. Use your model's stated sequence and timing; do not assume that reaching 90 minutes proves a stalled machine has finished.
If the documented procedure will not complete, contact Whirlpool with the model number, displayed lights and point where it stopped. Adding more cleaner is not a diagnosis.
Keep the cleaner and finish checks matched to the machine
Whirlpool's cleaning instructions specify an approved 16-ounce liquid ice maker cleaner for the procedure shown. A tablet cannot be substituted by guessing an equivalent dose.
GOHALL Ice Machine Cleaner Tablets address mineral deposits and everyday buildup in compatible standalone machines. Their listing does not establish approval for that Whirlpool liquid-cleaner procedure. The standalone ice maker compatibility and rinse guide explains the separate label requirements; refrigerator and freezer ice makers are excluded.
Complete the matching manual's draining, rinsing and reassembly checks before making ice again. Do not serve ice made during cleaning. A powered cleaning program and hands-on part washing have different access requirements. Before permitted component cleaning, disconnect power and replace all required parts and panels before operation. The Whirlpool cutter-grid access guide covers that separate maintenance decision.
Questions about the Clean light
Can unplugging replace the unfinished cleaning cycle?
No. Whirlpool lists a power restart as a troubleshooting option, but says to complete the Clean cycle if its indicator remains on afterward. A control restart does not remove cleaning solution.
Does “Cleaning Complete” mean every removable part was washed?
No. Whirlpool gives separate instructions for the bin, scoop and other permitted components. Follow those and the model's final checks; the light reports the program's completion.
