Dish Soap in the Dishwasher? What to Do About the Suds

Cancel a wash started with hand dish soap, clear the residue by your dishwasher's recovery procedure, and keep machine cleaner out until normal operation returns.

TL;DR: If hand dish soap went into the dishwasher, cancel the wash and use your model's drain procedure. Remove the dishes when the machine has stopped and it is safe to open. Clear the soap with the manufacturer's recovery method before running a normal load. GOHALL machine cleaner is not a foam-removal treatment.

Cancel the wash before more foam escapes

Hand dish soap can make enough foam to escape through a dishwasher door. Whirlpool's recovery guidance begins with canceling the wash, draining the machine and removing the dishes.

  1. Use the controls and cancellation procedure in your manual. Wait for spraying and escaping steam to stop before opening the door.
  2. Run the specified drain command. After the machine has stopped and drained, move the dishes to the sink and rinse off remaining soap.
  3. Collect spilled sudsy water with towels when you can do so safely. Keep away from wet electrical areas; do not reach for a wet plug or switch.

Keep machine cleaner out, and do not add dishwashing detergent to the sudsy water.

Use the recovery instructions for your dishwasher

GE's excess-suds guidance says to switch the dishwasher off and let the foam dissipate, which may take hours. Its preferred flushing method uses one gallon of cold water followed by pumping the water out. The drain controls differ between the mechanical and electronic models described on that page. Follow this method only when the instructions apply to your GE model.

Whirlpool publishes a different routine. An additive or button sequence from one manufacturer's page is not permission to use it in another machine. Find the instructions by model number or ask that manufacturer's support team before adding anything.

If the machine will not drain, leaks continue or a service code appears, stop recovery cycles and get model-specific help. For water that remains after draining, the filter-well and drainage guide explains why its location matters.

If nobody poured hand soap into the dispenser

Check what was loaded and what changed. Maytag identifies soap left on soaked or pre-washed dishes as another source of excess foam. A rinse-aid spill needs its own cleanup. GE also identifies the wrong type or too much detergent as possible causes of excessive suds. Check the detergent type and dose.

Machine cleaner can wait until recovery is finished

GOHALL Dishwasher Cleaner & Deodorizer Tablets are for food residue, detergent buildup and mineral deposits in a compatible household dishwasher. They are not sold as a defoamer or detergent for washing dishes.

Once the soap incident is resolved and the machine operates normally, routine care can resume if your model permits the cleaner. GOHALL requires a separate empty cycle with one unwrapped tablet in the detergent dispenser, used alone. The empty-machine cleaning guide covers that later task.

Questions after a dish-soap mistake

Can I finish washing the dishes with the soap already inside?

Cancel and clear the soap first. Hand dish soap creates excessive foam in an automatic dishwasher. Use automatic-dishwasher detergent for the next normal load.

Does a leaking door mean its gasket is ruined?

Excess suds can push water out. A leak alone cannot identify gasket damage. If leakage continues after the soap is cleared, use the model's troubleshooting guidance.
