In this guide
TL;DR: Before leaving your dishwasher unused, finish the last load and remove the dishes. Clear trapped food and any buildup that needs a compatible cleaning cycle before shutting off its supplies. Follow the model's vacation instructions. If the appliance may freeze, arrange its specified winterization; a cleaning tablet cannot provide that protection.
Find the storage instructions before the departure date
Look up the dishwasher's model number and find its vacation or storage section. GE's storage guidance directs owners to model-specific instructions for an unheated winter location or vacation home. Check whether the kitchen will remain above freezing and whether someone will keep using the machine while you're away.
For example, the Bosch SHP78CM5N manual calls for professional winterization when the dishwasher will sit unused for an extended period in a location with freezing temperatures. Schedule that work before leaving. An empty rack or a completed drain command doesn't establish that the appliance's water system is protected.
Finish the last wash with time left for machine care
Wash the remaining dishes with the appropriate automatic-dishwasher detergent, let the cycle finish, and unload. Keep water and power available for any separate machine cleaning that is needed. Don't begin a cleaning cycle as you're walking out the door.
Trapped scraps need physical removal where the manual permits it. For an owner-removable filter, use the filter cleaning and secure reinstallation guide. Leave unfamiliar pump covers and plumbing assembled. The door gasket and lower-edge guide covers accessible food film that can remain after a wash.
Interior residue is a separate job. GE's interior-cleaning guidance describes machine-cleaning products for buildup and cautions against abrasive pads or harsh cleaners. Choose a product and method your own dishwasher permits.
GOHALL Dishwasher Cleaner & Deodorizer Tablets address food residue, detergent buildup and mineral deposits in compatible household machines. Use the cleaner alone in an empty cycle, without dish detergent or another cleaner. The GOHALL empty-cycle guide explains placement and cycle choice. Finish the cycle, then let the interior air-dry with the door open when safe. Cleaning is not a leak repair, disinfecting treatment or freeze-protection step.
Follow the shutoff directions for your dishwasher
Manufacturer instructions can differ. Bosch's SHP78CM5N vacation section specifies turning off the main water valve and the water supply nearest the dishwasher before a warm-weather vacation. KitchenAid's W11133227C guide directs owners to turn off both water and power when the dishwasher won't be used during summer.
Use the directions that cover your model and installation. Identify the correct supply valve and electrical shutoff beforehand; ask the installer if either is unclear. Avoid pulling an installed dishwasher out or opening its electrical compartment to improvise access.
Make a note for the first wash after you return
Record which supplies you shut off and where the model's restart directions are. A household hot-water system that has been unused for two weeks or longer requires a specific precaution in the KitchenAid guide: before operating the dishwasher, run every hot-water faucet for several minutes. Hydrogen gas may have accumulated, so do not smoke or use an open flame during this process.
The condition concerns the hot-water system, not merely the dishwasher's last wash date. If someone continued using hot water in the home, dishwasher inactivity alone doesn't establish that condition.
Questions before leaving a dishwasher unused
Should I leave the door open for the whole trip?
Follow the model's storage guidance and keep the door from creating unsafe access or an obstruction. Sub-Zero, Wolf, and Cove's vacation FAQ advises a slightly open door for the dishwashers it covers. That is a manufacturer-specific instruction, separate from letting a GOHALL cleaning cycle air-dry safely.
Should I remove every drop of water from the bottom?
Check the model's expected water level first. GE distinguishes normal retained water by filter design. The filter-well water guide explains that distinction. Excess water or recurring drainage failure needs assessment before storage; scooping out visible water is not winterization.
Can I leave a cleaning tablet inside until I get back?
GOHALL's directions require a completed empty cleaning cycle. They do not authorize leaving a tablet or cleaning solution in the appliance throughout an absence. Finish the cleaning before following the dishwasher's shutdown instructions.
