In this guide
TL;DR: Dishwasher detergent washes the dishes in a loaded machine. Dishwasher cleaner is made for buildup inside the appliance. Both can come as tablets, so check the product's purpose and directions before using it. GOHALL dishwasher cleaner belongs in a separate empty cycle, without dishwashing detergent.
Cleaner and detergent have different jobs
Automatic-dishwasher detergent removes food from plates, glasses and utensils during a wash. A machine cleaner targets the dishwasher's interior. Both packages may say "dishwasher," and both products may go in a dispenser. Read the stated purpose before choosing one.
| What to check | Detergent and cleaner |
|---|---|
| Main job |
Dishwasher detergent: Wash a load of dishes. Dishwasher cleaner: Clean buildup inside the machine, within the product's stated uses. |
| What stays in the racks |
Dishwasher detergent: Dishes loaded according to the appliance manual. Dishwasher cleaner: Follow the cleaner's label. GOHALL requires empty racks. |
| Product form |
Dishwasher detergent: May be a tablet, powder or liquid formulated for automatic dishwashers. Dishwasher cleaner: May also be a tablet. Shape alone doesn't identify its purpose. |
| Directions to look for |
Dishwasher detergent: Dishwashing dose and placement for your load and machine. Dishwasher cleaner: Machine-care placement, cycle and whether detergent must be left out. |
Bosch's detergent guide describes tablets, powder and liquid as options for washing dishes. Its separate dishwasher cleaner is intended for residues in the appliance.
Empty-cycle directions are specific to the cleaner
GOHALL Dishwasher Cleaner & Deodorizer Tablets are for household dishwasher care between dishwashing loads. The directions require removing every dish and using the cleaner alone, with no detergent or other cleaner. Confirm that your dishwasher permits the product and cleaning method before use.
Some other cleaners have different instructions. Whirlpool says its affresh dishwasher cleaner can be used with or without dishes. That permission applies to the named product. It does not change GOHALL's empty-cycle requirement.
If you already have GOHALL cleaner and need the sequence, use the separate empty-cycle guide. Keep your regular dishwasher detergent for the next dishwashing load.
A cleaner may not be a descaler
Check the deposit claim as well as the word "cleaner." Bosch's cleaner 00312477 targets grease, starch and protein residues; Bosch explicitly says it does not descale and lists a separate descaler for mineral deposits. GOHALL's current dishwasher-cleaner listing includes limescale and mineral buildup among its uses. Those are product-specific claims, not a guarantee that every machine cleaner handles the same deposits.
Use the product your model allows for the problem you have. A cleaner label also does not establish a sanitizing or disinfecting claim.
When changing the cleaner won't answer the problem
If detergent remains in the cup after a wash, start with the dispenser and lid checks. Adding machine cleaner to the dishwashing load does not answer why the detergent stayed there.
Trapped food needs the care your model permits. A tablet cannot lift out a piece of debris, and it doesn't replace maintaining an owner-cleanable filter. The dishwasher filter guide explains how to identify the part and reinstall it correctly. Leave unfamiliar pump covers and service parts closed.
Questions about choosing dishwasher products
Does "all-in-one" detergent mean I don't need machine care?
The package's stated uses decide that. An all-in-one dishwashing tablet is still sold for washing dishes; the phrase alone doesn't establish a separate machine-cleaning function. Keep the dishwasher's filter and interior care on the schedule your manual requires.
Can I use hand dish soap if I run out of dishwasher detergent?
No. Use a product formulated for automatic dishwashers. Bosch warns that hand dish soap produces too much foam and can damage the appliance. GOHALL machine cleaner is also not a substitute for dishwashing detergent.
Does a Machine Care cycle identify which product to use?
The cycle name doesn't supply the cleaner's directions. Check the model's manual for approved products and placement, then read the cleaner's label. If those directions conflict, resolve the choice with the appliance manufacturer before running the cycle.
