TL;DR: Orange or pink dishwasher color can be food staining, removable residue or a mark requiring a rust check. Color alone cannot identify microbes. Follow your model's surface care; a compatible empty-machine cleaner can address supported buildup, without a promise of lasting pigment removal or a repair for damaged metal.
A colored surface and a coating that comes off are different clues
Note where the color appears before choosing a treatment: across the tub walls, on the rack, around the filter, or beneath a metal part. A photograph before cleaning can help you show the pattern to the manufacturer if it returns.
With the dishwasher off, cool and empty, use only the gentle surface-cleaning method in its manual. If an approved wipe removes material, there is residue to clean. If the surface feels clean but retains its color, more scrubbing may damage it without changing the stain. Neither observation identifies a microorganism.
For material caught in an owner-removable filter, follow the filter removal and reinstallation guide and your manual's electrical-isolation instructions before removing it. Keep hands out of unseen openings and debris that may conceal broken glass. A dirty lower lip or seal needs its own permitted gasket care; a cleaning cycle does not reach every fold.
Tomato-based food can leave pink or orange staining
GE's interior-staining guidance identifies tomato-based products, such as pasta sauce, as a common source of red, pink or orange stains. It says citric acid will not remove this type of discoloration, although the stain can fade over time.
That explanation fits a staining problem; it is not a diagnosis of every orange deposit. If the discoloration follows sauce-heavy loads and remains after permitted cleaning, check your model's stain guidance before choosing another treatment.
GE recommends removing excess tomato sauce before loading and running the dishwasher promptly. Whirlpool's rack-stain guidance also describes tomato-related pink or orange color and notes that heated drying can slow its fading. Where the model offers them, its rinse and air-dry options may help limit that staining. These are stain-specific choices, not a reason to pre-rinse every ordinary load or abandon the machine's drying instructions.
Mineral film and rust need their own evidence
GE separately lists calcium or iron buildup for gray or brown staining, and hard-water minerals or excess detergent residue for white film. Use those as possibilities to investigate with the appliance maker and your local water information. The shade of one mark does not establish water hardness.
Rust-colored marks deserve a look at the nearby objects and parts. GE's rust-staining guidance identifies items washed in the machine, apparent staining on internal parts and the household water supply as different sources. It recommends replacing extensively rusted racks and notes that rust from the water supply can require a plumber. A cleaner cannot restore missing rack coating, replace a damaged part or fix the supply water.
Record the affected location and model number before asking for support. Leave fixed heating elements, pump covers and plumbing connections in place unless your manual provides an owner procedure. Repeated new deposits, poor washing or drainage failure call for troubleshooting beyond the color.
Where an empty-machine cleaning cycle helps
An internal cleaner is useful when the remaining problem is buildup that the product and dishwasher instructions cover. GE's interior-cleaning guidance separates soap buildup and mineral film from the staining questions above. Its named cleaners and procedures do not establish approval for every other product.
GOHALL Dishwasher Cleaner & Deodorizer Tablets are intended for food residue, detergent buildup and limescale in compatible household dishwashers. Confirm that your model permits the product and method. Remove all dishes, unwrap one tablet and put it in the detergent dispenser. Use it alone, without dish detergent or another cleaner, on Normal or a permitted dedicated machine-cleaning cycle. Let the interior air-dry afterward when safe.
The empty-cycle guide covers the complete GOHALL procedure. Do not add extra tablets to chase an unidentified color or combine the cleaner with bleach, vinegar or another chemical. A remaining stain is not proof that cleaning failed, and a cleaner does not establish disinfection.
Questions about orange and pink dishwasher stains
Does pink color mean there is mold or bacteria?
Color alone cannot settle that. Manufacturer guidance includes food-related staining among the possibilities. Clean accessible residue by the permitted method; recurring deposits or an unresolved performance problem need model-specific support.
Should I keep running cleaner until every mark disappears?
No. Follow the product and machine directions for the supported buildup task. GE says tomato-related discoloration can remain and fade gradually. Increasing the dose or changing chemicals without identifying the problem can damage surfaces.
What if the orange material comes back after every wash?
Record where it returns, the cycle used and whether washing or drainage has changed. Check the permitted filter and surface care first. Use the odor and retained-water guide when those symptoms accompany it, and contact the manufacturer if the deposit keeps returning after the prescribed care.
